John Roberts sings the traditional folksongs of his native Britain in a manner that is at once authentic and authoritative. He puts these songs in their contexts, tracing their roots and development through the social history of the people who made them. And he sings them for enjoyment for the fun and exuberance of simply “belting out a good song.” Accompanying himself on concertina and banjo, his performances celebrate the relevance of tradition in the ever-changing world of today.

Best known for his long time partnership with fellow-Brit Tony Barrand, more recently he has been working as a solo performer, and appears on a regular basis at the Old Songs Festiva (www.oldsongs.org) and the Mystic Sea Music Festival. He has also been a featured solo performer at many other events, including the Newfoundland Folk Festival.

On the recording front John Roberts has recorded well over a dozen CDs with Tony Barrand, and with their celebrated Christmas pageant Nowell Sing We Clear, as well as his own solo output.
